'Blood and Fire'
The Army’s motto; refers to the blood of Jesus Christ and the fire of the Holy Spirit. Synonymous with the spirit of Salvationism.

Cadet
A Salvationist in training to become a Salvation Army officer.
Canditate
Individual making application to enter the College for Officer Training program.
Candidates Council
THQ Council designated to determine an individual’s suitability for entrance into the Training College as a cadet.
CFOT
College for Officer Training
Chief of the Staff
The officer second in command of the Army throughout the world.
Chief Secretary
A Salvation Army officer who assists the territorial commander with ecclesiastical and administrative responsibility for a territory and heads the territorial management team.
Colors
The tricolor flag of the Army. Its colors symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ (red), the fire of the Holy Spirit (yellow) and the purity of God (blue).
Command
A smaller type of territory, directed by an officer commanding.
Commission
A document conferring authority upon an officer, or upon an unpaid local officer, eg secretary, treasurer, bandmaster, etc.
Commissioners Conference
The coordinating and policy-making body of The Salvation Army in the United States, comprised of the national commander as chairperson, the four territorial commanders, the four territorial presidents of women’s ministries, the national chief secretary and the four territorial chief secretaries.
Corps
Local Salvation Army church and community service center.
Corps Officer
Salvation Army officer responsible for a local Salvation Army corps.

Division
Smaller geographic area within a Territory under the command of a Divisional Commander.
Divisional Commander
Administrative leader of a Division.
Divisional Headquarters
Administrative offices for a Division (DHQ).

General
The Officer elected to the overall command of the Army throughout the world. All appointments are made, and all regulations issued, under the General’s authority.
H
High Council
Composed of the Chief of the Staff, all active commissioners, except the spouse of the General, and all territorial commanders. The High Council elects the General in accordance with the Salvation Army Act 1980.
I
International Headquarters (IHQ)
The offices in which the business connected with the command of the worldwide Army is transacted.

National Commander
An officer appointed with responsibility for coordinating the four USA territories to ensure the consistent presentation of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army throughout the United States.
O
Officer
A Salvationist who has left secular concerns at God’s call and has been trained, commissioned and ordained to service and leadership. An officer is a recognized minister of religion.
Officer Ranks
Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lt.-Colonel, Colonel, Commissioner, General.
S
Salvationist
Member of a Salvation Army corps (church).
Session
Cohort of cadets; always given an identifying name of reference.
Soldier
A converted person at least 14 years of age who has, with the approval of the census board, been enrolled as a member of The Salvation Army after signing the articles of war (soldier's covenant).
T
Territory
A country, part of a country or several countries combined, in which Salvation Army work is organized under a territorial commander.
Territorial Commander
Chief ecclesiastical and administrative officer within a Salvation Army territory: President of the Board of Directors and chief corporate officer.
Territorial Headquarters
Administrative offices for a territory. (THQ)
Training Principal
Chief Executive Officer (President) of the CFOT. The designation “Principal” is terminology employed by The Salvation Army for the head of all of its Colleges for Officer Training throughout the world.
