What’s
New
2007 At The Salvation Army Museum of the West
Happy New Year!
2007 is going to be a big year for The Salvation Army Museum of
the West. The website has been given a complete face lift and redesigned
with users in mind, with more to come. The mobile display at the
museum has been prepared and is ready for off site exhibits and
learning workshops. The catalogue will continue to grow, which
will allow for even larger amounts of information to be dispersed
electronically. To keep up on all the changes at the museum you’re
going to want to bookmark this page and check in regularly.
How are all these changes going to affect you?
In a couple words; The Museum of the West will become more accessible
for people all over the Western Territory regardless of geographic
distance.
The digital exhibits will allow online visitors to
view displays comprised of images of artifacts and documents, written
descriptions of viewed material along with historical analysis
of the subject, some digital exhibits will also include audio.
The exhibits on the web page will be changed periodically and will
cover diverse subject matter that is not necessarily viewable at
the physical museum. The mobile display will be prepared for traveling
so that if a corps or division near you would like to host a workshop
the museum will be able to bring pieces of our past to your doorstep.
The growth in the catalogue will help all those who are trying
to research certain portions of the past by allowing the museum
staff to send digital primary documents to all those who request
them. By reaching out beyond our physical location, it is hoped
that, more people will take a heightened interest in Salvation
Army history and the history of our beloved Western Territory.

Museum of the West Working Hard to Collect and Preserve
Our History
On January 26th retired officers and life long Salvationists gathered
in Murrieta California to help the Museum of the West. The task
was to identify over 200 photographs from the territory’s
past. Needless to say not all the photographs were identified and
there is still a need for additional photo identification night
events, but the evening was a step in the right direction.
The concept of the night was simple, gather together as many people,
with memories stretching back thirty or more years, as possible
and let them identify people, places, or events as they reminisced.
The night not only gave an opportunity for reminiscing, it also
accomplished its main goal of helping fill in some gaps in the
historical record for the territory.
The Museum hopes to build on the success of the night and schedule
similar nights anywhere corps or divisions are willing to host.
Hopefully through events, such as these, the Museum of the West
will be able to fill in more of the historical record.
A special thank you is due to Majors Darren and LeAnn Trimmer
in Murrieta California. Not only did they help come up with the
idea, but they also graciously offered to host the first of what
will hopefully be many photo identification nights. Thank you,
also, to Major Ed Covert for all his help as president of the Retired
Officers Association for Southern California. Both Major Cover
and Majors Trimmer were instrumental in the night and helping make
it a complete success.
If you are interested in your corps or division hosting a photo identification
night please have your CO or DHQ contact the museum's coordinator, Clinton Trimmer
